Edward Telles is Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is also principal investigator on the Project on Ethnicity and Race in Latin America (PERLA). From that project, Telles recently published Pigmentocracies: Ethnicity, Race and Color in Latin America (University of North Carolina Press, 2014) with his multinational PERLA collaborators. He has also written several comparative articles with the PERLA data on ethnoracial educational and health disparities, racial classification and identification and public opinion about afro-descendant and indigenous people, which have recently appeared in the American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, Hispanic American Historical Review, Latin American Research Review, and Social Science and Medicine. In 2004, Telles wrote Race in Another America: The Significance of Skin Color in Brazil (Princeton University Press, 2004), which received the Distinguished Scholarly Publication Award from the American Sociological Association and in 2008, he co-authored (with Vilma Ortiz) Generations of Exclusion: Mexican Americans, Assimilation and Race (Russell Sage Foundation Press, 2008).
